Victus Study Skills System – A Review

Despite the name, Victus Study Skills System is actually much more than teaching students how to study. It is a simple, short-and-to-the-point life skills program that will teach students to apply what they learn in all areas of life. For this review, I received a full set of all levels, plus the Student Planner in the Victus Study Skills System. We have been using Level 3 (5/6-10/11) and the Student Planner. As we have progressed, it is obvious that if students apply what they learn in this curriculum, it will help them for the rest of their lives.

Program Organization

The basis of the entire program is three cornerstones:

  1. Where am I now?
  2. Where do I want to be?
  3. How do I get there?

In our review, we used Level 3 – Teacher Edition, Student Workbook, and Student Planner. The Teacher Edition features the pages in the student book (with answers filled in), along with extra directions to guide you. This is a very user-friendly Teacher Edition. You can just read through it most of the time.

All of the levels follow the same outline, so all ages of students can go through this at the same time. Each level is set up for the maturity level of the kids in that level. Here you can see an example of one lesson – first picture is the primary view, second is the elementary view, and third is the middle/high school view:

Through 10 lessons which can all be completed within a 5-hour period (spread out however you like), students walk through a study habit checklist and learning strengths assessment, write a mission statement, learn about goal-setting and actually apply it, learn how to manage time, set up a consistent study environment, and multiple study and test-taking strategies. In each section, it is obvious that the concepts taught can be applied to every area of our lives. As the saying goes… those who fail to plan, plan to fail. This course teaches students to plan for success.

There is also an extensive appendix with forms that can be used for recordkeeping and other needs. The planner is set up to teach students how to prioritize daily to-do lists, as well as high level goals. It is amazing to me how much meat is actually in this short curriculum.

Here is how my son completed his “Where Am I Now?” habit checklist:

Final Thoughts

I can’t recommend this program highly enough for EVERYONE. It is helping me along with my son. This is a comprehensive (though short and simple) program that can hold your students’ attention span because of the multiple learning styles used and the length of each lesson. I hope you will check it out: Victus Study Skills System.
