IEW Fix It! Grammar – A Review of The Nose Tree

Always looking for something new to get my son to actually enjoy grammar, I was excited for the opportunity to review Fix It! Grammar by Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). I was given a copy of the Teacher’s Manual and the Student Book for Book 1: The Nose Tree in exchange for this review. When you purchase a book, you also receive access to the digital copies using your online IEW account.

This program is very unique and only takes about 15 minutes per day, four days per week. One book provides 33 weeks of grammar instruction and practice. Fix It! Grammar teaches grammar at students’ point of need. Students learn rules in a story format, and they learn each rule as they run across them throughout the story. They learn vocabulary definitions, parts of speech, homophones, punctuation, rewriting, and many other areas within the English language.

How This Series is Used:

There are 6 books in the Fix It! Grammar series, which can be used from 3rd to 12th grades. Because the other books in this set require this book as a foundation, it is recommended that students start with The Nose Tree. However, if your student is more advanced, there is a placement test that he/she can take before choosing which book to use.

We are using it as the first-15-minutes-of-the-day work. The first day, my son said “oh that’s it?” He likes the brevity of the daily usage. If you have older students, it’s suggested that you double up weeks so that you can finish a book more quickly.

To set it up and begin using, you will need a copy of the Teacher Manual, the Student Book, a spiral notebook, and an envelope (or a pocket in the notebooks) to hold the grammar cards. Your student will work through a several step process each day (which is great for my kid who struggles with multi-step processes). He/she will define vocabulary words in the story, label parts of speech, punctuate correctly, and then re-write the entire story in his/her notebook. It is quick, simple, and thorough.

What We Think:

This is an awesome grammar program to get multiple lessons in one. It is unique in that it doesn’t just stay on one rule for a whole lesson. Through story format, students learn real USAGE of the rules and meanings in the English language. I love it. The Teacher’s Manual is so simple and clear to use that it makes the entire teaching process easy. We plan to continue using this program at least through this book, if not continuing through more books in the series. Because this is so well designed, I’m also going to look into the many other programs that IEW has to offer.
