YWAM Publishing is an awesome company that has produced many wonderful books. They have two series that are used a lot for homeschooling because of the rich history within the pages. The two series are: Christian Heroes: Then & Now and Heroes of History. Because we are working through modern American History (and we are currently at the Civil War), we decided to review Heroes of History- Abraham Lincoln. YWAM Publishing was gracious enough to send us a review copy (along with their amazing study guide resources) in exchange for this review.

Diving into the book, the reading is easy and interesting (even for my 7th grader who doesn’t love reading and struggles). It takes us from his birth in Kentucky all the way to his untimely death. This book teaches kids that Lincoln was a self-made man, meaning he worked hard to earn what he acquired in life. It also teaches them what an incredible leader he was, in how he abolished slavery and led America through the Civil War.

Now, when I chose this book to review, I had no idea how incredible the study guide would be. There is so much packed into this study guide! One section gives the “key quotes” from the entire book for students to memorize, one section has chapter questions for discussion, one has optional projects you can use with your student(s). There are also community resource links, related themes to explore, and a preparation guide for a culminating event to complete studies. Final Thoughts

When I first chose to use this book for supplementary reading, I didn’t realize that it would provide an entire curriculum piece for talking through Abraham Lincoln’s life. This is only the beginning for us (as this was the first YWAM book we have read)! We will be using more of these biographical books for studies as we come to certain periods of history.
