O My Soul – A Year Later

It’s been almost a year since I wrote this post… O My Soul. No sufficient words can explain the peace that has taken over my heart and life over the last 11 months. God is so good! Little Paula finally let go and made some changes… deep ones… that have caused a complete (and sometimes surprising to me) transformation in my soul. It’s true. When you let go, He’ll do what He wants to do in you.

So 10,000 Reasons came on the radio as I drove home from dropping Jeffrey off at school yesterday. It hit me again, deeply, how thankful I am for the change God has given me. I got home, made sure the other two kiddos were good for a while, and locked myself in my me-time room. As I pulled the guitar out of the case, I treasured the moment. Made sure the strings were all tuned, not because anyone was listening, but because I wanted God to have the best pouring out of my soul possible. This sacred song. One that has become so special to me… one that has become the main soul song between me and my Creator God.

I started playing the song slowly, singing quietly, almost a whisper. By the time I hit the final chorus, it was coming loudly from the depths of my soul. A soul that has been revived. It was amazing. Reliving the last year and recognizing the greatness of what God can do in a life was an incredible reminder. It led me to search scriptures for what our souls are called to do, and I want to share with you what the Lord shared with me…

Our souls are to LOVE God.

And the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. Deuteronomy 30:6

“Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” Joshua 22:5

“And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Matthew 22:37

“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30

“And he answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.'” Luke 10:27

Our souls are to OBEY God.

“and return to the LORD your God, you and your children, and obey his voice in all that I command you today, with all your heart and with all your soul.” Deuteronomy 30:2

“when you obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes that are written in this Book of the Law, when you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” Deuteronomy 30:10

Our souls are to CLING to God.

“My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.” Psalms 63:8

Our souls are to REJOICE in the Lord.

“Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD, exulting in his salvation.” Psalms 35:9

Our souls are to REST and BE SATISFIED in God.

“My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips.” Psalms 63:5

“For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.” Psalms 107:9

“Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.” Psalms 116:7

We are to LIFT UP and POUR OUT our souls to God.

“To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul.” Psalms 25:1

“Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.” Psalms 86:4

“But Hannah answered, ‘No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord.'” 1 Samuel 1:15

Our souls are to WAIT on the Lord.

“For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.” Psalms 62:1

“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.” Psalms 62:5

Our souls are to HUNGER and THIRST for God.

“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” Psalms 42:1-2

“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” Psalms 63:1

“My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.” Psalms 84:2

“My soul longs for your salvation; I hope in your word.” Psalms 119:81

Our souls are to TAKE REFUGE in the Lord.

“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.” Psalms 57:1

Our souls are to BOAST only in the Lord.

“My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad.” Psalms 34:2

Our souls are to PRAISE and MAGNIFY the Lord.

“And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.'” Luke 1:46-47

“Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul!” Psalms 146:1

Our souls are to BLESS the Lord

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Psalms 103:1-2

“Bless the LORD, all his works, in all places of his dominion. Bless the LORD, O my soul!” Psalms 103:22

Bless the Lord, O my soul… O my soul. Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul… I’ll worship His holy name. – Matt Redman
