Worship Wednesday: Masterpiece in the Sky

When I was little, I was scared to death of storms. Let me rephrase that… If there was even potential for severe weather, my brain and body became completely paralyzed. Uncontrollable shaking and worry filled every crevice of my frame.

Now? Well, now I love storms. Actually I get excited when the weather report shows a good chance of them. In fact, one of my “bucket list” items is to do one of those storm chasing trips. My brother and I text pictures to each other sometimes when we see cool clouds… potential for a funnel. Here’s one he took last night…

Beautiful, isn’t it? And this photo is only the beginning. The whole night was full of amazing tapestries of blue, red, and yellow. Flashes of lightning that left impressions in the black. Awesome clouds that cannot be described adequately with words. The sky was incredible.

So why is this beautiful to me now? What has changed? Simple. My fear has turned to awe. Awe of His beauty. The same clouds that used to spawn thoughts of death, pain, and destruction now conjure images of how big God is.

Storms remind us that He is in control. That He is bigger than anything we may fear in this world. We never know where the lightning will appear next. Or where the funnel may touch down. He is in control.

I found myself mouth-wide-open last night as I drove home from rehearsal. The show in the sky truly took my breath away. A moment like that is the ultimate worship experience. To witness His masterpiece in the sky and recognize that we have absolutely no control… God alone is great! He alone is worthy of praise.

So what is God teaching you about worship?
