More Urgent Than Coffee

I love coffee. And coffee houses. Those of you who know me well will laugh at this understatement. And the people who live in my house know that it’s not a good idea to speak to me before I’ve had my FIRST cup of coffee for the day.

In the craziness of the day-to-day, coffee is one little thing that calms me. Keeps me going. Settles my heart for a few minutes. I must have it when I’m writing. Or reading. Or driving. Etc. Etc. When I need a break, my first thought is to go to a coffee house…

In a recent coffee conversation with a friend, something hit me. What if my family knew not to talk to me until I’ve had my time with God? What if I let Him calm me? Keep me going? Settle my heart? What if I had to have Jesus when I’m writing, or reading, or driving, etc. etc.?

So many times we rely on tangible things to get us through the day. We forget that just because we can’t touch Jesus, He’s still the One who allows us to survive. He is the One who owns the master plan that will bring us true joy.

So as I approach this all-encompassing goal to make Jesus the most important thing in my life, I’m starting with a small step. Last night, I set my alarm for 6:00am. I asked God to give me the discipline to not hit snooze… but instead to get up and pray. Big-picture discipline doesn’t just happen. But when we take small steps toward a bigger goal, we don’t feel completely overwhelmed. We don’t give up when it seems too hard.

So thus begins the stairwell journey toward a disciplined life of urgency. An urgency of making my relationship with God numero uno in my life.

So what in your life is more urgent than Him? Are you willing to take small steps to rearrange your priorities and make Jesus more urgent than your “coffee”?

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. – Psalm 42:1
