Stir Constantly

This is the edited version of a post I wrote back in 2008. Since originally writing this, God has been teaching me even more about what it means…

——————–

It started out as an innocent enough night. We had planned to do our Christmas baking… fudge, pumpkin chocolate chip muffins, chocolate mint squares, sugar cookies, and snowball cookies… Sounds like a big fun mess, huh? Well, the evening turned out to be a bigger mess than just a dusting of powdered sugar on the floor and spots of food coloring on the counter.

If you’ve ever made fudge, you know there is a sugar mixture that must be boiling hot when it is poured over the chocolate chips. Cooking this mixture is a very delicate process, and the recipe says to “stir constantly” while it is heating up. Well… not realizing the REASON for this rule (thinking the mixture would just get a little tough to stir), I turned my head for a moment to eat a pumpkin muffin and suddenly heard this loud sizzling behind me. Terrified of what I was going to find, I held my breath and flipped around to see the sugar mixture boiling over on my beautiful glass cooktop! Smoke immediately POURED throughout the kitchen and into the living room. I panicked and screamed for my husband, who now knows I am not a good person to have around when there is a disaster.

If you have a glass cooktop, you know that sugar is the ONE spill you have to clean immediately to avoid ruining the surface. Long story short, I now only have three burners. Yet another reminder that there are reasons for instructions, especially those that are lined out very specifically.

The same is true in our Christian walk. God has specific reasons for the instructions He gives us in His word, even though sometimes we think we know better than He does. I don’t know about you, but when I turn around and go my own way, it usually ends up in a “boiling-over” mess. And that mess is exactly what He’s trying to prevent! Staying close to our Heavenly Father is the only real way to know what He wants from us… and the only way to keep our fellowship sweet is to stir constantly…

—————————–

In the spirit of stirring constantly, God has been breaking my heart lately, showing me where my real focus has been. He is using a book in my life that is truly changing my perspective about who I am. I’m learning to find myself in JESUS and not in church, my family, or the things of this world. Sounds simple enough, but friends, my eyes are being opened in a way they never have been. I’ll be sharing much more about that in the next couple of weeks, beginning with my review of the book, {w}hole by Lisa Whittle, on Thursday of this week.

Next week, as God allows, I will be sharing my own {w}hole story… and inviting all of you to join me in a journey in 2012! A journey to get rid of all of the holes that have clouded our vision and find ourselves in Jesus… The journey is called “Planted in the Word 2012.” A different Bible study than any you have seen before. I’m excited! And I can’t WAIT to share all of this with you! Stay tuned…
